My Interview with COUTUREcolorado blog

As the engagement season swings into high gear, I thought it would be best to let the cyber world know who I am and what Fleur Decor is all about. As a select wedding vendor in the florist category for COUTUREcolorado wedding blog, I was fortunate to be interviewed by the blog manager, Laura Dombrowski.

Meet Kristi, owner and founder of Fleur Decor.

Why and when did you start your business? From my youth, I had a passion for landscape and art. My mom is an artist painting watercolors and oils and I worked in landscaping for 2 years in college. With a genetic background in art and creativity coupled with landscape experience, floral design came natural for me.

I started Fleur Decor in July of 2001. My friends were getting married and needed 35 centerpieces that they did not have a budget for. I put together some floral centerpieces that everyone raved about. From that wedding, I knew I had to start my own floral design business.

How did you learn your craft? All of my floral design education comes from my experience in the field. I worked in landscape in college to learn how colors and textures combine into the most beautiful gardens. Using this landscaping knowledge, I was able to correlate the same commonalities from landscape design into floral design.

Any awards? Publications? ABC Channel 7 A-List Top Five Winner in 2007 and 2008 for Best Florist in Colorado. Fleur Décor was featured in 5280’s Top of the Town wedding article in the June/July 2005 issue.

Best advice to brides planning a wedding in CO? It is so difficult to plan an outdoor wedding in Colorado, as spring and autumn months always have a chance for snow and days in the summer months bring rain in the afternoons. Always be weary of this factor when planning your outdoor wedding here in gorgeous Colorado.

What is one hot trend this year in weddings? Bright colors seem to be the trend that I see the most for weddings in 2010. From lime green to hot pink to bright orange—color, color, color seems to be the trend.

When you not creating decor for a wedding, what do you like to do for fun? For fun, I enjoy snow skiing, running, wine tasting, travel, and spending time with friends and family. I also have an ongoing commitment to raising money and awareness for canine cancer.

Where did you grow up? How did you end up in CO? I am a Colorado native growing up in Littleton, Colorado. I am in love with the beauty and amazing natural landscape of Colorado, as most of the natural environment make for perfect wedding setting.

Fleur Décor is a “green” company, in that all of the stems and scraps from the flowers get composted and all of the glassware used is recycled over multiple weddings and events. I welcome the opportunity to do floral design for destination weddings planned by brides that live in Colorado. I have performed floral design for weddings in Rancho Santa Fe, California and Scottsdale, Arizona.
